A KID, A DOG, AND A MOUSE IN NEW YORK CITY!

Good Morning!

Next week, Krumbs and I are going on an adventure to New York City.  Have you ever been to New York City?  It is a big, beautiful and amazing city.  We’ll be traveling by train to Grand Central Station in New York City.  We will use subways, which are underground trains, to travel around the city.

The subway system in New York City is huge!  The stations where you catch the trains are underground and the tracks can be a home for mice, rats and many kinds of insects…even though you don’t really see them.  Krumbs and I have often wondered about the animals that live in the deep, dark tunnels of the subways and I bet author Anthony J. Langford does too because he wrote the most amazing story about a mouse living in the “Underground.”

The story is called “Underground: A Mouse Tale” and it is a new addition to the Imagination Café.  In this story, readers meet Muxie, a tiny mouse living in an underground station.  Muxie is curious about the world outside of the underground and decides to explore “the World.”  Read about Muxie’s adventure by clicking here.

Krumbs and I loved the story and just in case Mr. Langford was writing about New York City, Krumbs and I will be on the lookout for Muxie during our own adventure in New York City!  Goodbye for now….

WE ARE BACK BUT THINGS AREN'T LOOKING GOOD

Hello, Hello, Hello!!!  We are back from our fantastically fun, amazingly wonderful vacation in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and guess (just guess) what we did on our first day home?  Krumbs and I visited the dentist.  (Okay, okay, okay…I visited the dentist and Krumbs visited the veterinarian, but who visits the dentist on their first day home from vacation!?!?!?)

I learned that I have a cavity…a CAVITY!  I brush twice a day.  I floss twice a day.  I take very good care of my teeth, so why oh why oh why do I have a cavity?  I’m not an Egyptian, so I don’t use burnt egg shells to brush and I don’t use hairs from the neck of a pig the way the Chinese did in 1498, so why do I have cavities?

My mom says that my teeth are like her teeth.  I have soft enamel on my teeth and it breaks down easily and causes cavities.  I’m not sure what is going on, but I know I have to go back to the dentist for a filling next week-UGH!

Krumbs, in an attempt to make me feel better, has connected me to F. Rose Ross’s article on the Imagination-Café.  The article is called “Something to Smile About” and it gives a history of toothpaste from Ancient Egypt through right now.  (I’m thinking about strawberry toothpaste…how about you?)  Check out this super article for some great facts to impress your friends. You can see the article just by clicking here.

See You Later, Alligator!

BUBBLE, BUBBLE, BUBBLE

Here’s the Krumbs and Cookie Quirky Question of the Day:

If you use a triangle or square-shaped
wand to blow a bubble, what shape will the bubble be?

Did you say a bubble’s shape is a sphere even if the wand is shaped like a triangle or square?  If you did, you’re right.  Krumbs and I found out all about bubbles in Sandie Lee’s article “Bubble-ience” on the Imagination Café.  We learned all about the science behind one of our favorite summer activities.  Find out for yourself why bubbles are always round, how they help clean your dirty dishes, the five things bubbles DON’T like and the size of the biggest bubble ever created by clicking here!

Looking for more bubble fun?  Check out Tooter4kid.com's “Bubble Homepage” and you’ll find bubble poems, bubble solutions, and awesome bubble activities.  Click here.

If you try some of the activities listed on the “Bubble Homepage” or you read something awesome in Sandie Lee’s “Bubble-ience” article, tell us about it in the "Open Mike" section of Imagination Cafe by clicking here.

Goodbye everyone!  We are off to make some bubble magic...and we hope you make some too.  Have a great day!

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!!!!!!!

Happy Fourth of July!!!

Krumbs and I love this holiday because it's the BIRTHDAY OF THE USA!  Do you know the story of the Fourth of July?

Way back in the years before 1776, the colonists (the first people who came to live in the United States from Europe) started getting really angry because Britain wanted them to send more and more money and follow more and more British rulesThe colonists wanted to make their own rules and keep their money.

The colonists decided to tell Britain they wanted to be independent.  They asked Thomas Jefferson to write down all the things that were important to them.  He would write a letter to tell the British government that the colonists were going to make their own rules and pay their own bills.  He would tell them the things that were most important to the people living in the United States in 1776.

Thomas Jefferson wrote a sloppy copy of the Declaration of Independence on July 2, 1776.  Congress looked it over and made some changes, but on July 4th, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed and sent to Britain

The men who signed the Declaration of Independence were brave men.  They could have been hanged to death for turning against Britain, but they all signed anyway.  They believed in our country and in the people's right to live independently.

What are you doing to celebrate today?  Krumbs and I are going to fireworks and we are making Happy Birthday Cupcakes to celebrate our country's birthday.

Krumbs and I are frosting cupcakes with white frosting.  Then we'll wash strawberries and blueberries and cut up the strawberries.  We'll use the red strawberries and the blueberries to make designs on the white iced cupcakes and VOILA! red, white and blue cupcakes!

OOZY, ITCHY AND SCRATCHY...BUT WORTH IT!

Ugh!  Krumbs and I were just enjoying a little summer fun yesterday.  We weren’t trying to get in any trouble…but we did.

It all started with an animal bonanza hike in the woods!  First, we saw a flying squirrel!  The furry, little guy (or girl, we’re not sure) jumped from tree limb to tree limb and some of them were so far apart, the squirrel looked like he was really flying.  While we were staring up at flying squirrels, we noticed a hawk circling.  Hawks are the most amazing birds and when they are circling, it means they’ve found food and are getting ready to dive!  We watched it circle and circle before it dove to the ground…and shot back up with its prey dangling from its mouth!! Check out the photo of a hawk from the US Fish and Wildlife Image Gallery:

So, you ask, what’s the problem?  Krumbs and I spent so much time looking UP, that we forgot to look down.  We must have brushed past or walked into a patch of poison ivy because I woke up this morning covered with an itchy, angry, red, crusty rash all over my legs and arms…and even on the bottoms of my feet!!!!!

Poison Ivy is gross.  Poison Ivy is itchy.  Poison Ivy is oozy.  Poison Ivy when you are hot and sweaty is just plain miserable!!!  What’s a sweaty, itchy, oozy, miserable girl to do?

We went to the air conditioned public library, which is where I am sitting right now.  We are typing this while my body stops sweating and my skin stops itching-Ahhhh!  While we are here, we’re going to read Zach Gasior’s new article on the Café called “Combatting Poison Ivy.”  Click here to find out about the power of
Toxicodendron and how many different looks poison ivy can haveYikes!

Well, the air conditioning is working and my itching is stopping.  I think I’m ready to venture outside again because flying squirrels and soaring, diving hawks make a little itching and oozing seem almost okay.  Besides, I'll be more careful next time.  Have a great day and stop by again soon.
