Which amazing animal has a name

that means “river monster?”

The same amazing animal was the subject of a

1959 horror movie.

Are you curious?  Are you interested?  The animal is a “Gila Monster” and the Gila Monster is NOT a monster and it doesn’t live in a river!  Gila Monsters are a type of lizard and Krumbs and I learned all about them in a new Imagination Café article called “The River Monster of the Desert” by David Brown.  Here is an awesome photo of a Gila Monster Krumbs and I found on the US Fish and Wildlife Service National Digital Library:

Two weeks until summer vacation…and we can’t wait.  We are so excited about it that summer vacation is the subject of the Krumbs and Cookie Question of the Day. Here's today's question:

What is your favorite thing to do in the summer???

CATCH THE SCENT OF SOMETHING AWESOME!

Krumbs and Cookie’s Question of the Day:

How far away can a dog be and still pick up a scent?

I bet you’ll be shocked by the answer, even though Krumbs was not shocked at all.  Are you wondering?  Are you curious?  Do you know the answer?  A dog can pick up a scent from half a mile away!!!!  Krumbs can really smell a squirrel (or me) from half a mile away. 

Dogs are amazing and I don’t feel that way just because I happen to have a particularly fantastic dog.  Krista Noble wrote this incredible article for the Imagination Café called “Knowing Nose: How Canine Sniffers Help Humans” and it is chock full of really amazing information on man’s (and my) best friend.  Krista says, for instance, that dogs can even detect scents under the water!

Do you know what else is really cool today?  Well, last night Krumbs and I helped our mom bake a super cool cake for our friend’s birthday.  How cool was it?  I can say this… we’re freezing because this cake is so cool.  Krumbs, my wonderful pup, is really thrilled about it because the cake is a dog!  REALLY—it looks like a puppy!  Check it out below:

IT WAS A SCARY, HAIRY, SCALY WEEKEND!!!

Guess what we did this weekend?  We experimented with...FRUIT!  Yes, you read that right, we experimented with fruit this weekend.  Temperatures reached ninety degrees Fahrenheit this weekend and we needed hydration (so we wouldn’t look like the dehydrated cucumber snake from last week!) Tell me, what is better than sweet hydration?

Fruit is chock full of H20 and boy, did we need it this weekend!  We checked out Sandra Muncaster’s amazing article, “Scary, Hairy, Scaly - Freaky Fruits” and then we taste-tested.  We’ve done this before and we loved it, so we tried again…with awesome results!

I’ll be honest with you.  We didn’t try the thorn-covered, smelly, pink “king of fruits” from South America.  We also didn’t sample the scale-covered, seedy fruit with seeds that must be well-chewed in order for our bodies to digest them.  Guess what?  We didn’t eat the hair- covered fruit with poisonous seeds either!  Are you curious about these wild fruits?  Click here to learn all about these deliciously different and dangerously daring fruits!

While Krumbs and I were inspired by Sandra Muncaster’s article, we decided to sample some fruits that we could find more easily.  We ate starfruit (yummy and star-shaped), kiwi (love the lime green color and edible seeds) and uglyfruit (not attractive looking, but sweet and tasty.  These were deliciously different, yet we found them easily in our grocery store.
